Description

This painting was made standing ankle deep in guano on Petermann Island. We always wore rubber boots which had to be disinfected upon returning to the ship in order to avoid transmitting infection between colonies. I was privileged to work so very close to the nesting birds who had no fear of human beings. There is a very young recently hatched Gentoo penguin in the bottom right. The birds here begin nesting later than those further north… so they were earlier on in the breeding cycle.
