During the ‘Covid lockdown’ I spent the permitted daily outing along ‘my’ local bit of shoreline in Portland Harbour and got to know the birds personally…at least it seemed like it! I became familiar with their habits as a result of my own: I knew where to watch them feed, toss the weed and quarrel. The surface of handmade cotton rag indian paper was built up with ’true’ gesso (made by heating up rabbit skin size and whiting) is encrusted with Sandsfoot Grit and clays from the site consolidated with the same animal protein size. I combine this with water based pigments. It is traditional way of working with a history that extends back to the Ancient Egyptians.
